students will be able to write a 5 paragraph informative essay about current issues in immigration and their opinion of the topic.
Students will be able to support their opinions with different sources from various article and videos found on the web.
Introduction:
Immigration has been a hot topic in the media recently. What is your opinion on immigration? Do you feel that people from other countries should be able to come to the United States to take advantage of the unique opportunities available here? Do you feel that immigrants who come to the United States are actually causing our nation more trouble than its worth?
Task:
To write a 5 paragraph informative essay regarding your opinion(s) on immigration.
Timeline:
1. Watch "La Misma Luna" (up to 3 days)
2. Read and watch various videos and articles online (2 days)
. -Take notes on the movie and videos/articles so that you can cite them in your essay.
3. Write your essay (1 day)
4. Edit and complete final draft (1 day)

Essay advice:
When writing your essay:
1. Stay away from terms such as "I feel" or "I think". Take a more objective approach and write in a style that is more up-front and confident.
Not good: I feel that immigration is bad, in the video the little boy almost dies because of how dangerous it was.
Good: Immigration to the United States, because of the laws, can be very dangerous. This danger is illustrated in the movie "La Misma Luna". Carlitos faced many obstacles that put him in serious danger during his journey. According to the Wikipedia article, neatly 2,000 people have died trying to cross the US-Mexico border between the years 1998 and 2004.
